  • Pork producers dispute claims of animal antibiotic overuse
The pork industry objects to claims that data released by the Food and Drug Administration regarding animal antibiotics sold in the U.S. offer proof of excessive use of the drugs in livestock. "The FDA report does not show that livestock producers overuse antibiotics, and it doesn't show that they are being irresponsible," a National Pork Producers Council official said. "It simply shows that 28.7 million pounds of antibiotics were sold in the [U.S.]."FoodSafetyNews.com (12/17)
  • Expert: Enzyme could cause rapid spread of drug-resistant bacteria
A doctor from Harvard Medical School said a loop of genetic material, called New Delhi metallobeta-lactamase 1, has spurred the development of drug-resistant superbugs that are causing infections and spreading rapidly in the U.S. and Israel, among other countries. Dr. Robert Moellering said the ability of the NDM-1 enzyme to resist various types of antibiotics is expected to cause problems in the coming years. The adoption of nonprescription antibiotics in India "sets the ideal stage for the development of such resistance," Moellering wrote in a New England Journal of Medicine commentary. Reuters (12/15)

"We want to encourage students who really want to pursue this path to pursue it and reach out to us who work here in the vet school to help keep you on that path," an official at the vet school said. WLFI-TV (West Lafayette, Ind.) (12/16)

People are already beginning to plan strategies for getting in shape after the holidays, and many may need to do the same for their pets. About 45% of dogs and 58% of cats are overweight, and they depend on their owners to help them lose weight, says Meredith Rettinger, a veterinarian who recently led eight dogs and their owners through a successful 90-day slim-down program. She's now heading Project: Pet Slim Down, a national pet weight-loss program sponsored by Purina Veterinary Diets. KPVI-TV (Pocatello, Idaho)(12/16)

Pet-product retailers and manufacturers in California have agreed to post warning labels on flea collars containing the chemical propoxur, which is listed as a carcinogen in the state.
